HotDIR Plus 7.1 Documentation (c) Copyright 1991 by Robert Woeger
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KRUTILS, the short name for the Kinsman-Redeemer Utilities, are a collection of
useful utilities for your PC. KRUTILS has evolved from the need for quality PC
utilities to perform useful tasks such as directory display, find a file on the
hard disk, tell information about the PC's equipment, give disk and memory
statistics, view a documentation or text file, and change the cursor back to
its original state after some nasty other program chaged its color or shape.
HotDIR Plus is a part of the KRUTILS package, but is now being distributed
separately for those who just want to preview HotDIR Plus. All references
in this KRUTILS documentation are applicable to HotDIR Plus 7.1 also.
The KRUTILS references are being left in this documentation so you can see
what you will get when you register HotDIR Plus 7.1. For only $17 you get
the latest HotDIR Plus, plus all of the Kinsman-Redeemer Utilities (KRUTILS).
The HotDIR Plus only distribution package does not include all of the KRUTILS
programs listed below, but rather includes only:
HDIRPLUS.EXE - the HotDIR Plus program Version 7.1
HDIRCNFG.EXE - the HotDIR Plus configuration utility
HDIRPLUS.DOC - this documentation file
HDIRCNFG.DOC - docs for HDIRCNFG
PAYFORME.DOC - tells how to register (pay for) HotDIR Plus
VIEW.EXE - program for reading the .DOC files
KRUTILS is a totally new release of some revised and some new utilities written
by Robert Woeger, the original author of the HotDIR color sorted directory
utility. All programs have been written from scratch and are now being released
to the general computing public as User-Supported Software (sometimes called
Shareware). What this means is that you get to try out these programs at no
cost to you for 30 days, and at the end of the 30 day period you can either:
1. Buy the program (register it) from the Author (see below)
or
2. Stop using the programs and erase them from your PC
We are so sure that you will be pleased with the KRUTILS programs that we are
marketing them in this try-before-you-buy method. See the file PAYFORME.DOC
included with the KRUTILS package for complete details about paying for KRUTILS.
The cost is only $15 for KRUTILS! If you want a disk with the latest version
plus the optional commission serial number it costs only $2 more! So for the
low price of only $17 you get the latest version of HotDIR on disk, your own
personalized serial number used for commission tracking, and news of updates in
the future. Plus we will send you details about our extensive, quality PC
Shareware software library.
When you pay for the programs (register), you will get unlimited phone
technical support. Our tech support hours are Monday-Friday 12 noon to 7 PM
Mountain time (West coast time + 1 hour). Our number is (719) 471-8306.
Please be prepared to give us your name (as registered with us), the program
name and version you have problems with, and the type of PC (hardware) and
DOS version. Also any TSRs loaded would be helpful.
How does the optional commission program work you might ask?
You will receive $1 cash as a commission for each sale (registration) we receive
that has the serial number from your copy of KRUTILS. So all you do is act as
our sales person by giving away copies of your KRUTILS disk to friends, family,
co-workers, bulletin boards, on-line services, disk duplication libraries, and
computer clubs. Then just sit back and wait for the commissions to start coming
in. While we can not guarantee how much money you will make in commissions
(that depends on how hard you work at distributing KRUTILS), we believe you will
be pleasantly surprised at how our commission system works. For complete
details about commissions read the PAYFORME.DOC file. The commission program
is optional and you do not have to participate in it at all if you buy KRUTILS.
What files come with the KRUTILS package?
The files listed below come with KRUTILS. If you are missing any of them, you
may obtain an un-registered Shareware evaluation copy directly from us for only
$5 which includes postage. Colorado residents please add appropriate sales tax
(see PAYFORME.DOC for Colorado sales tax rates).
KRUTILS 1.0 consists of:
HDIRPLUS.EXE - the upgrade to the well-known HotDIR color sorted
directory utility. Includes support for large hard
disk partitions under DOS 4.0
HDIRCNFG.EXE - an all new color and options configuration utility
that lets you easily customize HotDIR Plus
KRINFO.EXE - information about your PC's equipment and status of
disk drives, memory, and others. This is the
replacement of Rob Woeger's PCSTAT utility.
KRFIND.EXE - finds file(s) anywhere on your disk. Useful for
finding duplicate copies of files and lost files in
hard to find sub-directories.
KRVIEW.EXE - a documentation on-line viewer utility. Lets you
easily read program documentation and ASCII text files
on the screen.
CURSORC.COM and CURSORM.COM - color and monochrome display versions
of a useful utility which resets the cursor back to
its original color and size after some "nasty" program
has changed it on you.
KRUTILS.DOC - Documentation for KRUTILS 1.0 (This file)
PAYFORME.DOC - File which tells how to register (pay for) KRUTILS.
Includes KRUTILS order form, prices, and explains the
benefits of our unique optional commission program.
ABOUTKRS.DOC - (Optional) This file tells about Kinsman-Redeemer
Software and our other products and services we offer.
How to run the utilities?
All KRUTILS are fairly self-explanatory. You simply type the program name
(example: HDIRPLUS) to run the program. For help in running KRINFO type
KRINFO /I and you will get help. For help with HotDIR Plus type: HDIRPLUS /H
All other programs tell how to get help on the screen when you run them.
To direct your HotDIR Plus directory listing to your printer, use the DOS
re-direct option (i.e. HDIRPLUS /options > PRN). You can use any valid DOS
device to direct the HotDIR Plus output into (i.e. disk file). Your printer
must be set up to display the upper IBM character set (above 128 ASCII). These
are the IBM line graphic characters. Most printer require you to flip a DIP
switch to get these upper ASCII characters to print properly. If you graphic
lines in HotDIR Plus print funny characters, consult your printer manual on how
to activate the ASCII graphic IBM PC characters. By the way, make sure your
Pause is off when you re-direct output to the printer or else the PC will pause
and wait for you to hit a key. Type HDIRPLUS /P to toggle pause mode if you
currently have HotDIR Plus' pause mode on.
Adjust your lines per screen default in HDIRCNFG to match your screen size.
The default is one less than the actual default PC screen size. We did this
to allow for people who have fancy multi-line default DOS PROMPTs. If you want
to regain the extra line, or you have a 43 or 50 column EGA or VGA screen,
change the screen lines to match you screen and software.
AT&T PC owners: make sure when you run HotDIR Plus that you are in regular
text mode (non-graphics screen) or else you may get an "Illegal function call"
error message. HotDIR Plus can not change text colors on certain graphic mode
screens. This is a limitation of the AT&T video board.
HotDIR Plus is our flagship utility. It is a new re-write of HotDIR which
we first released in 1987 and now estimate that over 500,000 PC users have
used and/or are currently using. If you are currently using HotDIR (2.1) or
the Xanadu Utilities, we ask that you stop using them as they are no longer
supported by us. Instead, please obtain the latest version of KRUTILS and
use them instead.
Thank you for taking the time to try out our new User-Supported utilities!
Please register them so we can continue to improve them and provide you with
the best quality, lowest cost software around. Send you payments, questions,
comments, and "wish-lists" of improvements to us at our new address:
